"Out on a Limb"
For two voices, guitar, and cello
Lyrics (after Isaiah 55:12-13)
O my God reaches higher than a redwood's crown
O my God reaches deeper than an oak tree's roots
O my God is more sturdy than a mighty sequoia trunk
O my God
Instead of thorns, a cypress shall come up
Instead of briers, a myrtle shall grow
If that's why my God is made of
What am I afraid of?
Take a breath, take a chance, though the odds are slim
Take a stand, take a stance, go out on a limb
And if you start to fall
Remember you are loved by the God of all
O my God chose a frail human body
O my God chose to feel human pain
O my God is a child of refugees
O my God knows the depth of our shame
Instead of wealth, She came down with nothing
Instead of strength, He made himself weak
If that's why my God is made of
What am I afraid of?
Take a breath, take a chance, though the odds are slim
Take a stand, take a stance, go out on a limb
And if you start to fall
Remember you are loved by the God of all
O my world has been filled up with hatred
And my heart has been filled with fear
O my God, sometimes I cannot hear You
Still my God, let me be Your hands
Instead of walls, I'll help to build shelter
Instead of war, I'll help to build peace
Instead of silence, I'll speak truth to power
Instead of watching I'll stand up and speak
I will listen and hear
I will make a joyful noise
I'll seek justice for all
And live kindness and love
Instead of despair
I'll break forth in singing
Alleluia,
Dona nobis pacem.
