"Do Not Be Daunted", for SATB choir, piano, soloist.
I first encountered this text in the form of a visual art print, part of a series created by artist and pastor Cristina Airaghi. The print hangs in my office as a daily reminder to stay engaged in the challenges of the world, but not to let them overtake my sense of self. Between confronting ongoing legacies of systematic racism and gender inequity, a deadly global pandemic, stark divisions in our communities, and the ever-looming threats of climate change, there are no shortage of opportunities for grief. But the journey towards justice is a team relay, not a solo sprint. Rabbi Shapiro’s text pairing with Micah 6:8 urges us to take the steps we can take, to give ourselves grace and accept the contributions we find ourselves capable of making.
The solo line may be performed by a singer of any voice part or gender.
Music by Stephen O'Bent.
Lyrics
Lyrics by Rabbi Rami Shapiro, translated and interpreted from Pirkei Avot 2:15-16 and Micah 6:8
Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world’s grief
You are not obligated to complete the work
Neither are you free to abandon it
Do justly, now
Love mercy, now
Walk humbly, now
